How to clean engineered wood floors
One of the best things about engineered wood floors is how easy it is to...
Grey laminate flooring is a highly popular flooring solution. This type of flooring replicates the look of grey oak & grey wood flooring but is less prone to damage. It’s also less expensive than traditional wood. Browse our extensive collection of grey laminate floors below or read on for more information.
Grey laminate splits into two families, and which one you pick decides how it ages. Warm greys and greige have a brown base instead and carry no such date stamp. To tell them apart, hold a sample against a sheet of white paper, where a cool grey looks faintly blue and a warm grey slightly brown. North-facing rooms get cool daylight already, so a warm grey keeps the floor from going grey-blue. Our guide to understanding colour covers undertones, and free samples let you do the paper test at home.
Grey laminate needs underlay to support the floating floor and help it perform properly. For concrete or screed subfloors, choose an underlay with a built-in damp-proof membrane or fit a separate membrane underneath. Acoustic underlay is a good option for upstairs rooms or lightly furnished spaces, as it can reduce noise and prevent the floor from sounding hollow.
Before installation, make sure the subfloor is level, with no more than 3mm of variation over a 2m span, and leave the unopened packs in the room for 48 hours to acclimatise. Allow a 10 to 12mm expansion gap around walls and pipes. Explore our laminate underlay range to find the right option for your subfloor.
Crisp white or soft off-white walls keep a grey floor bright and modern, while warm greige or clay walls counteract the coolness so the room never feels clinical. Sage green and navy both sit well against grey without fighting it, and dusty pink brings warmth without going brown. The scheme to watch is grey walls over a grey floor with grey furniture, which can look flat in UK daylight, so bring in wood-toned furniture or warm textiles. Hold your paint chart against a floor sample before deciding, or take a look at our guide to matching wall colour to your floor for more advice.
Greige works across more of a house than cool grey does. The beige base means it sits with oak furniture and warm textiles as easily as it does with white walls and chrome. Cool grey is more specific, and it looks best in a bright contemporary room where it reads as a deliberate choice rather than a default. If you’re flooring several rooms at once, greige gives you one floor that works throughout. For a single modern room, cool grey can be the sharper option. Order both from our natural laminate range and compare them where the floor will go.
Laminate has a wood-based core, feels harder underfoot and carries a more convincing grain in grey oak decors, which is why it wins in dry rooms. Grey LVT is waterproof all the way through, softer and quieter to walk on, and graded by wear layer in microns rather than by AC rating. The rule is simple enough, in that dry rooms take laminate and anywhere water reaches the floor takes LVT. Our grey LVT range covers the same decors, so you can compare the two side by side before choosing.
Grey laminate is cheaper than grey tile on the material, and considerably cheaper once fitting is counted. A click laminate floor is a fast dry install you can often do yourself, while tiling needs adhesive and grout, plus levelling and days of labour. Tile does win on being fully waterproof and better suited to wet rooms and underfloor heating. For the tile look at a fraction of the cost, and warmer underfoot, our stone effect laminate is the closer match.
