How well does wood effect vinyl hold up over time?

Wood-effect vinyl is easy to keep looking its best because the wood-grain design is protected beneath a clear wear layer. Unlike timber, it won’t cup or develop gaps as humidity changes, and it won’t need sanding or refinishing. Regular sweeping and an occasional damp mop are usually all it needs. Real engineered wood flooring can last longer and may be refinished several times, but it requires more care and isn’t suitable for areas that regularly get wet.

How do you prepare floorboards for wood effect vinyl?

Floorboards need covering before wood-effect vinyl is fitted because the joints and nail heads can become visible through the vinyl within a few months. These lines can cut across the printed wood grain and make the finished floor look uneven. Lay 3.2mm hardboard or 6mm plywood over the floorboards first, fixing it with screws at 150mm intervals so it won’t come loose. What is the most realistic wood effect vinyl flooring?

How realistic wood-effect vinyl looks depends mainly on its texture and pattern repeat. Choose an embossed or registered-embossed finish, where the surface texture follows the printed grain. A longer pattern repeat also helps prevent the same plank design from appearing too often across the floor. Wide planks, a matt finish and natural tonal variation can make the flooring look more like real timber. Our LVT range adds bevelled plank edges for even greater realism, although it costs more. How does wood effect vinyl compare to real wood and laminate?

Wood-effect vinyl offers the best water resistance, feels warm underfoot and is usually the most affordable of the three, making it a practical choice for kitchens and bathrooms. Laminate is more resistant to scratches and has a firmer feel, so it works well in living rooms, bedrooms and homes with pets. Solid and engineered wood flooring provides the look and feel of genuine timber, can be sanded and refinished, and may add more value to a home. However, they typically cost £20 to £60 per m², compared with £7 to £30 per m² for vinyl, and neither is suitable for wet rooms.

Can wood effect vinyl be used in a bathroom or kitchen?

Wood-effect vinyl is one of the few ways to bring the look of oak or walnut into a bathroom or kitchen. Its water resistance is the main reason people choose it over real wood in areas that regularly get wet. Solid and engineered wood can cup and swell when exposed to water, which may void the warranty, while vinyl won’t absorb moisture in the same way. Sheet vinyl offers added protection because a single piece can cover the room without seams where water could seep through. Which direction should you lay wood effect vinyl flooring?

Lay wood-effect vinyl planks along the longest dimension of the room to make the space look longer and more open. You can also run them towards the main source of natural light, as this helps the grain catch the daylight and makes the joins less noticeable. In an open-plan space, keep the planks running in the same direction throughout so the floor connects each area.
