Engineered wood flooring is manufactured from several layers of real wood, which is then glued and pressed together at very high pressures to create durable and stable flooring that is even stronger than solid wood flooring.
Engineered floors come in a number of different thicknesses, which range from 0.5mm to 6mm, and a range of different woods and colours so that you can truly have the best of both worlds.
Engineered flooring also comes in one of two styles: square-edged or bevelled – if you want a minimal join between each board and a more seamless transition between the planks, choose a square-edged floor. If you want a more rustic look that is more akin to traditional solid wood flooring then you want bevelled-edge engineered floors.
If you are keen on wood flooring, and appreciate the natural beauty of oak then engineered oak flooring could be just the type of floor for you. Purchasing an engineered wood floor instead of solid wood flooring would give the durability and aesthetically pleasing look of engineered oak flooring at a lower cost.
Solid wood floors will both shrink and expand as the room temperature and humidity changes throughout the year, and as the moisture from the sub-floor is absorbed.
Because of the way engineered wood flooring is construction, it isn’t prone to the same problems.
Engineered wood flooring is the ideal choice if you want the benefit of under floor heating but the effect of solid wood flooring due to its more stable nature.
Generally the answer is yes – however the type of underlay you need to use will depend on the type of subfloor you have.
If you are using a click system engineered floor, you must use an underlay.
